Kelly Ramirez is an American living abroad in the Netherlands, where she is a postdoctoral scholar at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology. Kelly is a soil ecologist interested in characterizing the diversity and biogeographical patterns of soil microbes across the globe. In November 2016, Kelly and her colleague Dr. Jane Zelikova founded 500 Women Scientists, an organization with a mission to make science open, inclusive and accessible to women. In two years the organization has grown to 20,000 women and supporters worldwide, and has more than 300 local chapters with 5,000 participants.  500 Women Scientists has rapidly become the foremost organization for the transformation of leadership, diversity, and public engagement in science.

Marlene Zuk is a professor of biology at the University of California, Riverside, whose research centers on behavioral ecology and the effect of parasites on host ecology, evolution, and behavior. Much of her work has focused on mate choice and the evolution of sexual signals. In addition to research in ecology and evolution, she has studied the progress of women’s careers in science and presented evidence that women tend to be under-represented in senior jobs, to be paid less, to secure smaller research grants and to abandon scientific careers.  This is true to a greater or lesser extent in all countries, including those (such as Norway) with high profile commitment to gender equity.

Kenneth Ruud is a professor of theoretical chemistry at the University of Tromsø - The Arctic University of Norway. His main research interests are development of new ab initio methods for the study of molecular properties for non-relativistic and relativistic methods. He is the leader of the BALANSE project Prestisje at UiT, which aims to improve the number of female researchers leading research projects. He is also the leader of the Equality and Diversity committee at UiT. Since the gender balance at UiT in both teaching and research positions is already very good, and in line with the goals of the Prestisje project, Prof. Ruud is in an excellent position to inspire and help other academic institutions attaining gender equality.

ABOUT

Gender Equality Workshop 2018

The focus of this first ever Gender Equality workshop of the Equal Opportunities Committee at the Department of Biology, NTNU, is on improving the work environment at the department and to raise awareness and reduce gender biases currently present.

Consisting of 2 consecutive days, there are group specific sessions for department employees on day 1, and open lectures on day 2.

Day 1

We will discuss the results of the 'Gender Equality Survey' that was completed just before summer, and discuss why gender equality on the workflow in all aspects in important, and how as a department, we can go about in achieving this. Our international speakers will guide these sessions with talks and group discussions.

Day 2

This day is for public lectures from our invited speakers, all of whom are experts in their respective field, and on various gender equality issues in an academic setting.

The IBI Equal Opportunities Committee

The Equal Opportunities Committee will assist the management team by developing and implementing measures that in the short and long term lead to a more even gender distribution among employees, especially among permanent scientific positions. In addition, we want to promote measures to make The Department of Biology at NTNU (IBI) an attractive workplace for internationally recruited employees.

The committee shall prepare and assist in the implementation of:

  • Measures that make IBI more attractive to talented teachers and researchers of both genders, including those with an international profile, both in recruitment and retention, including work environment and career development.

  • Measures and procedures specifically aimed at recruiting and retaining skilled women.
